Herbert (Herb) Kazan beloved husband of the late Lois Irene Kazan (nee Doniger). Loving father of Mike (Jenny) Kazan and Laura (John) Brussel. Cherished grandfather of Tommy, Sarah, Sophia, and Grace. Dear brother of the late Theodora Paul.
Herb lived to be 92, still walking around and sharp as a tack until the end. He was a resilient man who survived colon cancer in his mid-forties, a major surgery in his early seventies, and even Stage 4 Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma at age 82. Because he had defied death so many times, when he passed away his family half expected him to wake up, say “one more thing”, and continue telling stories.
Herb graduated from Marshall High School, served in the U.S. Army, received his teaching certificate, married Lois in 1960, became father to Mike (1969) and Laura (1974), and worked as a Chicago Public School teacher for around 30 years (at various schools including Dunbar Vocational High School). Herb spent his retirement working at hardware stores, traveling around the world, and enjoying life, especially his grandchildren and grand-dogs. Herb was a kind and gentle man and an incredibly humane person who never wanted to hurt anyone. Indeed, for much of his life he may have been too accommodating, although he made up for that by reinventing himself as a tough guy over his last few years. Herb loved stories, especially telling them, but also reading them or watching them on TV or at the movies. He had an incredible ability to recall and include obscure details from long ago in his stories – and if he re-told a story, it wasn’t because he forgot but because he thought it was important to re-tell it.
Herb loved his food, especially sweets, and he enjoyed talking about food almost as much as eating it. Herb was also known for his sense of humor, even when it came at his own expense from his misguided efforts at fixing things. Herb Kazan will be remembered fondly as a beloved husband of 65 years, a doting father, a wonderful father-in-law, and a grandfather who adored and was adored by his grandchildren.
