Funeral Service Information:
Flora Alderman, 93, passed away on May 11, 2025, leaving behind a loving family, devoted friends, a deeply enriched community, and a lemon cake recipe beloved by her grandchildren. Born February 25, 1932, she grew up in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois. Her love of camping brought her to Camp Nokomis in Mercer, WI, where she met the late Martin Alderman, the nephew of a camp director—beginning 59 joyful years of marriage. Together they raised three children, and she enjoyed being the grandmother of seven, with one great grandchild and another on the way. Flora is also fondly remembered by her extended family, each of whom shared a special bond with her.
Flora was a powerhouse of energy and leadership, especially in the South Suburban Jewish community. She was active with Temple Anshe Sholom and the National Council of Jewish Women, focusing on women’s issues, education, and social welfare projects. As director of the Anita M. Stone Jewish Community Center, she helped transform it into a thriving hub, especially through its day camp. Generations remember her as a guiding force.
Her many honors included being named Jewish Chicagoan of the Year and receiving the Iris Dreyfuss Award for volunteer service. Retirement didn’t slow her down—she and Marty spent 17 years as Road Scholar tour leaders, proudly hosting guests in Chicago, spending summers at Camp Chi in Wisconsin, and making dear friends during winters in Delray Beach.
Flora’s greatest priority was always family and friends. She made connections wherever she went and was a steadfast listener and supporter. As one grandchild said, “Being with Grandma meant you were friends with everyone by default.” Flora will be deeply missed after a life profoundly well-lived. To continue her legacy, donations in Flora’s memory may be made to the JCC of Chicago at https://giving.jccchicago.org/donate/.
