Funeral Service Information:
Martin Burton Barancik, age 84, passed away on January 6, 2026 from a long battle with lymphoma cancer and kidney failure. He was born on June 21,1941 at Chicago Lying-In Hospital to Benjamin and Frances Weintraub Barancik. Marty grew up in South Shore attending Bradwell Elementary School and South Shore High School. His first two years of college were at the University of Illinois’s Navy Pier campus. He then transferred to the Champaign-Urbana campus where he earned his BS and MS in Biochemistry and his Law Degree.
When he was a college senior, he offered a freshman girl the seat next to him on a crowded Illinois Central train of UI students traveling from Chicago to Champaign. Three years later, the train mates Marty and Susan became husband and wife!
His career path as a Corporate Patent Attorney led him to work at major companies in Pittsburgh, Kalamazoo, Evansville, IN and Piscataway, NJ. Whether his work focused on patents for oil products, pharmaceuticals, plastics, or soaps, he excelled at his work. After their 50th anniversary, Marty and Sue moved back to Chicago to enjoy the big city life. A special delight was their active participation in Osher Lifelong Learning classes for seniors. Marty was a life-long Cubs fan and a staunch Bears enthusiast.
His family adored him and he adored them. His children say that he was an excellent family man, loving being a dad and a grandparent. He was always generous and mindful of his parental role. Marty will always be in their hearts and memories. Marty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Susan, his three children, Barry, David (Stacy), and Mindy and grandchildren, Hannah, Abigail, and Ziv. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jerome Barancik.
Funeral services were held. In lieu of flowers, contributions to JUF, Jewish United Fund in memory of Martin Barancik would be greatly appreciated.
